There was a time long, long ago when the most famous Cyrus wasn't Miley.

When Neil Patrick Harris was the smartest doc in town, not a suit-wearing-womanizer.

When Kenan Thompson was on All That, not Saturday Night Life; When AOL told you that you had mail and not your iPhone; When Hanson was your jam and Beanie Babies were worth thousands. Britney was too busy dating Justin to be a judge on the X-Factor, and Will Smith was still from fresh from living in West Philadelphia (born and raised…).

So if living in the 2010s has got you down, then hide in the 1990s. Grab your Nintendo, Walkman, Waldo and Mario, because pop culture will never be the same. It's a place where if you got knocked down, you got up again, and Pluto was still allowed to rock it as a planet.

   1. The Dial-Up Sound

   Go on, get your fix:

   Yeah, that's the stuff.

   2. You've Got Mail

   AOL's email notification sound was positively Pavlovian for many '90s netizens. It was confirmation that a) you had successfully connected to the ISP, and b) someone out there likes you.

   Those dulcet tones belong to voice actor Elwood Edwards, whose wife worked for AOL in 1989. She brought tape of his other famous phrases - "welcome," "goodbye," and "file's done" - into the office. The rest is history.

   3. The Whir of a Floppy Disk Drive

   In their prime, each one of these puppies could hold about 120 MB - great for storing a few documents or images; less great for large applications and games. Before CD-ROMs became the norm, you might need 10 or 15 disks to install one program.

   Listening to the drive tick away while the progress bar drew closer to 100% was like Christmas Eve for anxious young nerds.

4. 4. Your Screen Saver Collection

   Flying toasters. Tropical aquariums. Fireworks.

   Screen savers not only protected your tube monitor from dreaded "burn-in," but were the technological calibration of your personality.

   Many were free (or free to try), and it's now safe to admit you kept your collection long after LCD screens made them functionally obsolete.

   Don't even get us started on the holiday ones.

   5. Trying to Look Cool in Your AIM Away Message

   Before you wasted your life on Facebook, you wasted it on instant messaging programs like AIM.

   The status update wasn't even a twinkle in Mark Zuckerberg's eye when IM users would inform friends of their thoughts, feelings and jams via away messages.

   6. Anthropomorphic Office Supplies

   Clippy, ty velkolepý parchante. Vždy jsi byl o krok napřed. Je to, jako byste přesně věděli, co píšu, než jsem dokončil psaní věty.

   Než jste získali internet od kabelových nebo telefonních společností, dorazil prostřednictvím poskytovatelů telefonických služeb. Nabídka místních telefonních čísel by vás spojila s poskytovatelem internetových služeb, jako je Compuserve (na obrázku), Prodigy a později AOL - služba, která by v 90. letech měla dominovat.

   Být „online“byl více kurátorským zážitkem. Na domovské obrazovky ISP bylo pepřeno odkazy na témata, sekce a zprávy. Web „obecně“byl jen jednou z mnoha možností.

   Surfování po internetu se později stalo běžnou normou, protože uživatelé píchali portály ISP ve prospěch standardizovaných prohlížečů, jako jsou Internet Explorer a Netscape Navigator.

   Děti dnes, s jejich Wikipediemi a jejich Googly.

   V roce 1993 jsme měli multimediální encyklopedii Encarta od společnosti Microsoft. Nabídl vám standardní tarif Funk & Wagnalls s přidanou hodnotou barevných fotografií, hudebních klipů, videí a interaktivního obsahu.

   Společnost Microsoft později přidala články od Collier's a Macmillan, díky čemuž je každý rok komplexnější.

   Zvláštní nostalgický význam byla začleněná hra s názvem MindMaze, která pověřila mladé hráče, aby prozkoumali hrad odpovědí na drobnosti - víte, protože učení může být zábava.

   9. Microsoft Windows Entertainment Pack

   Nejlepší část o získání nového počítače? Zjistěte, které hry byly zabaleny do vašeho operačního systému.

   Počítače se systémem Microsoft Windows zahrnovaly svazek ikonických 16bitových časových odpadů: FreeCell, Minesweeper, Rodent's Revenge a malý drahokam s názvem SkiFree.

   Hra byla vytvořena ve volném čase programátora Microsoft a byla přidána do zábavního balíčku v roce 1991 a vyzvala hráče, aby se vyhnuli překážkám při lyžování z nekonečného kopce. Hnusná sněhová příšera stále pronásleduje sny mnoha hráčů dodnes.

    Před Twitterem existoval Internet Relay Chat (IRC), obrovská anonymní divočina rozdělená do kanálů. Platforma nebyla vlastněna ani provozována jedinou entitou - spíše by síťový administrátor provozoval svůj vlastní server, kolem kterého by se mohla tvořit komunita. Šlo o distribuovanou komunikaci v její nejčistší podobě.

    IRC sítě dnes stále existují a kdokoli s funkčním klientským programem může skočit dovnitř. Jen si pamatujte děti: Na internetu nikdo neví, že jste pes.

    11. Rise of PC Adventure Gaming

    Barevná grafika a větší kapacita disku byly skvělé pro produktivitu, ale také podnítily představivost nového druhu vypravěče.

    Vydavatelé her, jako je Sierra Entertainment, to udělali s franšízy jako King's Quest (na obrázku), Space Quest a Leisure Suit Larry. Tyto relativně nelineární herní světy umožnily hráčům zkoumat a řešit hádanky pomocí textových příkazů. Skripty byly bohaté a často humorné.

    Hry se později vyvinuly v dobrodružství „point-and-click“, protože počítačová grafika je stále sofistikovanější.

    12. Starověké textové procesory

    Textové procesory existovaly před dobou PC, ale byly to stroje s jedinečným účelem.

    Software jako Microsoft Works a Corel's WordPerfect ohlašoval věk „publikování na počítači“.

    A konečně, efektivnější způsob, jak napsat svou fikci fanoušků Xena: Warrior Princess.

    13. Hudební knihovna chudého člověka

    Zatímco technologie MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) předchází webu o více než deset let, příchod zvukových karet kompatibilních s MIDI na počátku 90. let vedl ke vzniku kultury skladatelů křesel, kteří by mohli populární skladby sekvencovat a volně je sdílet online.

    Jistě, sada Back to the Future znějí lépe se skutečným orchestrem, ale tato verze je bez chladného angelfirského webu, který jsem právě našel.

    14. Rise of PC Puzzle Gaming

    While consoles generally focused on action platformers, the keyboard and mouse lent themselves to puzzle games, which got richer in the '90s.

    Lemmings (pictured) challenged players to save a troop of witless rodents by assigning them tasks like building, digging and blocking.

    First-person puzzlers like Myst set the bar for esoteric questing. Kudos if you can beat that thing without cheating.

    15. Command Line Operating Systems

    Fancy icons be damned. If you wanted to run a program or see a list of files in a pre-1985 PC, you'd have to type that shiz out on a command line - likely in MS-DOS.

    It really wasn't until 1990, when Windows 3.0 hit the market, that graphical user interfaces made the big time.

    16. Peer-to-Peer File Sharing

    The advent of the MP3 socked the recording industry in the gut. It wasn't long before peer-to-peer file sharing networks like Napster and Kazaa turned music ownership on its head.

    Legal and moral issues aside, the notion of downloading any song on demand (well, within the hour) was revolutionary. Though Napster was sued into oblivion, it paved the way for the media consumption paradigms we enjoy today - namely, iTunes, Netflix and Spotify.

17. 17. Under Construction Clipart

    If you were savvy enough to have a site in the early days of the web, chances are you were always looking for ways to improve it.

    Netiquette demanded that any unfinished web pages be marked "Under Construction" to ensure the safety of passersby (you wouldn't want someone to trip on a stray HTML bracket and sue your ass).

    Bonus points if the signage was an animated GIF.

18. 18. The Rise of PC Strategy Gaming

    While Sierra dominated the adventures, Maxis took gold on strategy and simulation. Its "Sim" franchises upped the ante on the entire genre - Sim City, a jewel in the crown, of course. Again, personal computers tended to trump consoles on breadth and depth, and innovative gameplay concepts were on the rise.

    Notable giants of the era include Sid Meier's Civilization and the birth of real-time strategy staples like Blizzard's Warcraft and Microsoft's Age of Empires.

    19. Media Players

    So you've amassed an MP3 collection of dubious legality. While Napster has a built-in audio player, the discerning music pirate of 1997 requires a stand-alone app.

    The web was chock-full of music players, but WinAmp took the cake. Playlist support, a serious EQ and skins to suit any taste made this free download an essential dorm party jukebox.

    20. Web Portals

    Even as curated ISP experiences faded away, web users still flocked to sites that offered a "home base" for their daily surfing.

    Yahoo became the go-to homepage of the Internet. Its web directory put news, search, ecommerce and eventually email in one handy site. A link from Yahoo.com all but guaranteed a traffic windfall for the lucky destination.

    While web portals have fallen out of fashion in the U. S., they still drive piles of traffic in emerging online markets - in Asia, for instance.
